The wonder of the World.

The **Great Wildebeest Migration** is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on Earth, often referred to as *"The Greatest Show on Earth."* Every year, over **1.5 million wildebeest**, along with **hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles**, embark on a **circular journey** across the Serengeti (Tanzania) and the Masai Mara (Kenya) in search of fresh grazing grounds and water.

KHighlights of the Wildebeest Migration

1. The Never-Ending Cycle.

   - The migration is a year-round event, dictated by rainfall patterns.

   - Herds move in a roughly 800 km (500-mile) loop between Tanzania and Kenya.

2. Dramatic River Crossings

   - The most iconic (and dangerous) part is the crossing of the Mara River. where crocodiles lie in wait.

  - Thousands of wildebeest perish due to drowning, predators, or exhaustion.

3. The Calving Season (Feb–March)

   - In the Southern Serengeti around 500,000 calves are born within a few weeks.

   - Predators like lions and hyenas take advantage of the vulnerable newborns.

4. Predator Action

   - The migration supports a high density of predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, and African wild dogs.

5. A UNESCO World Heritage Site

   - The Serengeti ecosystem is protected, ensuring the survival of this ancient phenomenon.

Best Time to Witness the Migration

- June–July: Herds move toward the Western Serengeti and prepare for river crossings.

- August–September: Dramatic Mara River crossings in Kenya’s Masai Mara.

- October–November: Return journey to the Serengeti as the short rains begin.

Why It’s a Wonder ?

- The sheer scale with the millions of animals moving as one is unmatched in the animal kingdom.

- A life-and-death struggle unfolds daily, showcasing nature’s raw beauty and brutality.

- It’s a critical part of the East African ecosystem sustaining countless species.

An experience worth seeing...
